Sisters Initiating Steps
Towards A Renewed Society
SISTARS is a registered charitable, volunteer organization that owns and operates 99 Euclid Avenue in North Point Douglas Winnipeg.
We own, operate and maintain Barber House, an award-winning Heritage building that is over 100 years old, adaptively designed to integrate with our childcare centre. Barber House provides low-cost rent to community groups in the North Point Douglas area and beyond.
We support all communities by providing quality licensed childcare through the Eagle Wing Child Care Centre. Eagle Wing not only provides quality childcare for local children, it also provides educational opportunities through financial support and practicum positions. Nurturing the potential of children and families is our way of connecting to community and empowering change.
Through our building and community garden, we provide a safe, inclusive and accessible neighbourhood place that supports community development and supports opportunities for intergenerational learning.
Barber House: Available for rent to the community.

With the rise of respiratory illness in children and an increased demand for child care the board has determined to keep the rental of Barber House to the community during evenings and weekends. This would reduce non-essential visitors, renters or tenants in the building and decrease the risk to children and staff.
With a grant from The Winnipeg Foundation, we now have a facility coordinator to manage rentals. Rentals of Barber House can be made most Tuesdays, Wednesdays, and Thursdays from 6 to 9pm. Space can also be rented Saturdays 9am - 4pm. Sundays can be available upon request.

The Board reviewed policies from Manitoba Health, Manitoba Association of Early Childhood Educators and best practices set forth by other organizations. In addition, SISTARS had a virtual call with a Public Health Inspector to discuss the overall risks and assessed the current demand for child care in Point Douglas.
SISTARS continues to make huge strides to keep Barber House looking its best. In 2021, we saw the power washing and staining of the deck, re-painting of the trim, removal of dead trees, removal of compost area, updating Chris Burrows Memorial Rose garden area, new raised beds installed, new address sigange added, maintenance of the grounds and landscaping. The Board remains committed to keeping Barber House is top condition for use of all community members as a community space.
As per the recommended guidelines, outdoor play time is coordinated into cohort groups. Staff clean high touch areas between uses.
SISTARS mission and mandate (as registered with the CRA) is to maintain the space known as Barber House for the community. This includes maintaining the building, grounds and features. SISTARS maintains this space for use by all community members and rents the space and a low rate.
Yes. At this time children at Eagle Wing continue socially distance as much as possible and are kept in cohort groups. This means all areas are being used to make this distancing possible.
